<p>              Some people walk a rut in the mud trying to decide upon an exercise program. They don&#8217;t like running because it hurts their feet. Maybe they&#8217;ll walk down to the gym and have a look around. But those bodybuilders and power lifters are too intimidating, so they just walk on and don&#8217;t look back. What about the health club? Walk in and look at all the pretty women with hard bodies. What to do? Keep walking and thinking.</p>
<p> Sometimes you really can&#8217;t see the forest for the trees. This whole time you&#8217;ve been pacing around you&#8217;ve been active and burning calories. Oh my gosh! You&#8217;ve discovered your exercise program. Yes sir, walking can be your fitness program. It&#8217;s been shown to have many health benefits and there are several variations you can use.</p>
<p> Most people take walking for granted and fail to associate it with any health benefits. They think you have to grunt, sweat and experience pain to be healthy and happy. But, that just isn&#8217;t so. Anything that keeps you active can keep you healthy, and here&#8217;s how.</p>
<p> Aerobic Power</p>
<p> Contrary to popular belief, walking can increase your aerobic power. Any previously sedentary individual who walks three times per week for 30 minutes a moderate pace will show improvements. Doing so for 12 weeks can increase aerobic power by 12 percent. Obviously, the faster you walk the greater the aerobic benefits.</p>
<p> Body Composition </p>
<p> To lose fat, you must be active and burn calories. Walking is an activity and it burns calories. In a 16-week study, a group of people lost an average of 12 Ibs and decreased body fat by six percent. The group walked 90 minutes per day for five days per week. Walking a mile burns approximately the same number of calories as running a mile; it just takes more time.</p>
<p> Blood Lipids </p>
<p> Walking can increase the levels of HDL cholesterol, which transports cholesterol to the liver for removal from the body. A program of at least 12 weeks of high-intensity, long distance walking will increase the HDL levels in the blood and put one at a lower risk for cardiovascular disease.</p>
<p> Blood Pressure </p>
<p> If you suffer from mild or moderate hypertension, walking can lower both the systolic (pumping) and diastolic (resting) blood pressure. Even people with normal blood pressure will experience a slight drop in pressure. These reductions may not be spectacular, but they are significant. Other walking benefits, such as weight loss, will also help lower your blood pressure. Walking also lowers your resting heart rate.</p>
<p> Mental Health </p>
<p> Taking long walks can also be good for the soul. Any form of exercise can relieve stress, combat depression and ease anxiety. You may not be able to walk away from life&#8217;s problems, but you can walk off the stress.</p>
<p> Bones and Joints </p>
<p> Men lose bone strength as they age, although not nearly to the same degree as women. Regular walking can have positive effects on bone density and lessen the risk of fractures. Because walking places less mechanical stress on the joints, it is less likely to result in injuries.</p>
<p> Think of it this way; the journey to good health starts with a single step. Putting one foot in front of the other is all it takes to get started. Walking is simple, safe, accessible to everyone and has the lowest dropout rate of all exercises. After a while, most people want to experiment with various forms of walking that will further increase their aerobic capacity and strength. </p>
<p> Here&#8217;s some basic walking programs to try.</p>
<p> Walking 101</p>
<p> This is for beginners. It&#8217;s for those who are severely out of shape and want lo begin an exercise program, like newly uprooted couch potatoes or those recovering from an illness. It consists of brisk walking at around three to four miles per hour. To do this, take longer steps than normal and proceed at a faster pace. Be sure to learn to walk erectly and keep the shoulders back. Breathe deeply as you walk and let your hands and arms swing freely at your sides.</p>
<p> All you really need for walking is a good pair of shoes and some comfortable clothes. Any type of shoe will suffice. Most wear regular tennis shoes, but you can purchase walking shoes at a sporting goods store. Clothing should be loose and comfortable, and appropriate for the weather if you walk outdoors.</p>
<p> Advanced Walking </p>
<p> As your strength and aerobic capacity increases, you&#8217;ll want to pick up the pace and walk both faster and for longer times. However, at some point you will reach a level where you can&#8217;t challenge yourself further by walking alone. Now it&#8217;s time to get serious about walking and add some challenging variations to the routine. To increase the workload, try walking over hilly terrain. This will raise your heart rate and burn more calories at the same time. Walking briskly up a 10-degree incline will burn about 300 calories in less than 30 minutes. </p>
<p> Another method for increasing the workload is to carry additional weight as you walk. Most commonly you see people carrying light hand-held weights when walking. Alternatively, ankle weights, weight belts or weighted backpacks can also be used alone or in combination. Try walking up a hill with a weighted backpack if you still think walking isn&#8217;t much of a challenge.</p>
<p> Race Walking </p>
<p> This is not a more intense form of walking, but a unique form of movement. Sure, you&#8217;ve seen the people who seem to wobble rapidly along the sidewalk &#8211; that&#8217;s race walking. This requires using strides, where longer steps are taken and the feet follow a straight line. The strides are very rapid and the pelvis rotates dramatically with each step. This shifting of weight with the hips causes the person to glide smoothly along the path.<br /> Besides lower body movements, race walking also uses the upper body. </p>
<p> The arms are used as pendulums to regulate the leg and hip movements. As you step forward with your leg, drive your opposite arm backwards to propel you forward. As the leg pushes forward, bring your arm forward for the next movement. Because race walking is not as natural as normal walking, it will take some practice and possibly a little coaching to get it down right.</p>
<p> The good thing about walking is that you can do it just about anytime and anywhere. You can walk around the block at lunch time, walk to work or simply walk around and explore your own neighborhood. During the spring and fall you will surely want to take advantage of the outdoors. Many parks have walking trails and most athletic fields have running/walking tracks.</p>
<p> Everybody&#8217;s heard of mall walking. Many malls open early in the morning so people can walk their long or circular corridors. Since most malls are multiple level, you can walk the stairs to make your workout more strenuous. Best of all, malls are excellent for the summer and winter months; they provide a safe environment, and they&#8217;re free.</p>
<p> If you don&#8217;t want to have to leave the house to walk, then invest in one of the many good quality treadmills that are available. Many offer a computer that will vary the walking speed, as well as constantly increasing and decreasing the slope to simulate mountain trails.</p>

<p> Simply defined, fitness walking is walking at a brisk enough pace to maintain your heart rate in the target training zone. Fitness walking is the cornerstone of a total approach to personal fitness that uses walking as the major exercise, but also includes improving strength and flexibility, paying attention to diet, and reducing stress. With fitness walking, the goal is to develop a training program that will strengthen your heart. There isn&#8217;t any magical overall fitness formula that is right for everyone; it&#8217;s all tailored to the individual&#8217;s ability and level of fitness. And fitness walking is virtually an injury-free exercise, with a very low participant dropout rate.</p>
<p> Walking speeds vary greatly.</p>
<p> For a person in reasonably good health, a normal walking pace is somewhere between 3.0 and 3.5 m.p.h. </p>
<p> 3.75 to 4.0 m.p.h. is considered a brisk pace, although speeds of up to 5.5 m.p.h. are not unusual for well-conditioned athletes. For most people, anything below 3.0 is slow.</p>
<p> Regular walking can help you lose weight.</p>
<p> Fitness walking is an excellent adjunct to an overall program to lose weight. While walking burns about 20 percent fewer calories at most speeds than does running, it still is the preferred exercise for most individuals who seek to lose weight. This is because walking is ideal for a consistent program, and consistency is what counts in an overall lifetime weight-management program.</p>
<p> Walking produces a variety of important health benefits.</p>
<p> Walking improves cardiovascular efficiency, may lower blood pressure, relieves stress, reduces body fat, strengthens leg and abdominal muscles, and may improve the quality of sleep. Moreover, biomechanics studies have demonstrated that the foot lands with only 1.5 times the force of body weight in walking, while it may exceed three times body weight in running. Thus walking poses much less risk of orthopedic injury. </p>
<p> Walking is truly an ideal sport for consistent, life-long aerobic conditioning.</p>
<p> Fitness walking is especially beneficial to the cardiovascular system. By expending 2,000 calories a week in vigorous exercise, participation in a fitness walking program can significantly reduce the risk of heart attack. Indeed, fitness walking is frequently incorporated into a cardiac rehabilitation program.           </p>

Right now I&#8217;m going to reveal to you the 16 essential strategies that have enabled my clients to achieve these important goals. These simple strategies can be immediately implemented into your lifestyle with little sacrifice on your part (okay, if not eating artery clogging fast food burgers and fries is a big thing for you, then maybe you won&#8217;t look at that sacrifice as &#8220;easy,&#8221; but I guarantee you it will add quality years to your life). Why believe me? Because I have been training people for 14 years. Because I&#8217;ve seen people fail and others succeed. Because I&#8217;m the only person in San Diego who has 15 years of solid medical training, a NSCA CPT, and I am also a Certified Master Fitness Instructor through the Prestigious Coopers Institute. Because all of my Personal Training Clients are happy and getting good results. I am giving you this information because I&#8217;m tired of seeing people getting ripped off and wasting their time and energy on the latest &#8220;Miracle&#8221; diet or device. I&#8217;m tired of seeing slick marketers make a lot of money by selling people lies that won&#8217;t help them. So let&#8217;s get right into it. Read on to discover&#8230; 1. How to Stay Motivated.One of the biggest problems most people have is that they work out great for a couple of weeks, then just fade away. The people who stick with it are those who have these two things in common: * They don&#8217;t follow a set routine. Routines always become boring. They also set you up for repetitive stress injuries. They don&#8217;t work either. Your body quickly adapts to any routine and doesn&#8217;t need to change any more to keep up. * They get on an effective exercise program, so they get good results. The people who lose their motivation are the people who get frustrated because they are not getting good results. When you are getting good results, you will be so pumped that it&#8217;s actually hard to quit. A good fitness instructor will help you with both of these items. 2. Don&#8217;t make it so hard.Most people think of exercise as torture. They imagine that you must sweat and groan for hours every day to get in good shape. Not so, my friend! Two days per week of 30-minute low-intensity cardiovascular exercise (walking, jogging, biking, swimming); and two days per week of 30-minute light resistance training (using weights or resistance machines) is adequate in the beginning. As you become acclimated to the lifestyle shift, you can add more days and get improved results. But beware: if you try to do too much too fast, you may end up quitting altogether. If you&#8217;ve tried and failed doing it alone, then I suggest you get a training partner or personal trainer who will help you sustain your motivation.  3. Your exercise program needs only three things. If you skip any one of these three, your results will suffer. * Resistance Exercise. This will raise your metabolism and cause you to burn more calories all day, even when you are asleep at night. * Cardiovascular Exercise. Your heart rate during cardio exercise should be 60% to 80% of your maximum heart rate. The simple formula for calculating your 100% maximum heart rate is 220 minus your age. If the intensity of your exercise increases your heart rate beyond 80%, slow it down a bit. If your heart rate isn&#8217;t at least 60%, quit loafing. Your personal trainer can supply you with a simple heart rate monitor you can wear during exercise so you always stay in your peak fat-burning range. * Proper Nutrition. A good, hard workout can burn maybe 300-500 calories in 30-45 minutes. It only takes one Big Mac to flush your entire workout down the toilet.  4. Don&#8217;t waste your time working small muscles with isolated movements.If you don&#8217;t enjoy doing resistance training or are pressed for time, concentrate on working the largest muscle groups with compound resistance movements. When I see overweight people doing wrist curls or lateral raises, I wonder why. It&#8217;s generally just a lack of understanding of how their bodies work. Most people want to lose fat and tone and firm their bodies. The way to do that is to use resistance (weights or machines) to train the large muscle groups. Men should be concentrating on legs, chest and back. Women should concentrate more on their legs and back. The best exercises for legs are lunges or squats (your personal trainer will show you the proper form and then monitor you during the exercise) and leg press. The best chest exercise is bench press, and the best back exercise is the seated row. All of these are compound movements, which means they incorporate multiple muscle groups.  5. Always, always, always stretch.Stretching improves flexibility, blood flow, muscle recovery, low back pain and a host of other things. Additionally, stretching can prevent injury, make you sleep better and improve your performance in all sports. Always stretch, but be certain not to stretch cold muscles. You should always warm up before stretching. However, it is very important that you know how to stretch. Never bounce! Your personal trainer will show you the proper execution and timing of your stretches.  6. Don&#8217;t do traditional sit-ups. Unless you are super athlete with an incredibly well-developed midsection, sit-ups can lead to a strained lower back and possibly lumbar injuries. But it gets worse. Rather than hitting your abdominal section, sit-ups can shift exercise tension to your hip flexors &#8211; which defeats the purpose. There is so much misinformation about how to strengthen, tone, and firm the midsection, it&#8217;s almost frightening. It is very difficult to learn proper abdominal exercise technique by reading about it or watching it demonstrated on a video. You need to do it with supervision and get feedback about your form from a knowledgeable source. And keep in mind that you use your abdominal muscles in almost every single movement you make. Strengthening your abdominal region is the single most effective way to prevent, or recover from, low back pain.  7. Set realistic, attainable goals.You must have tangible, quantifiable, short-term, and long-term goals for your fitness program so you can gauge your progress. It&#8217;s crucial to have a &#8220;baseline&#8221; before you begin, so you can measure success. Your personal trainer can give you a complete fitness analysis (you need this!) that will aid you and your trainer in developing a personalized fitness program, which addresses your particular needs. Having goals, particularly short-term goals, allows you to track your progress and keep motivated when times are tough and you don&#8217;t feel like exercising. Keeping a journal of your cardio and resistance training workouts, as well as tracking what you eat is truly a fitness success secret. Just remember that your goals should be realistic and attainable. The best way for you to understand what is realistic and attainable for you is to talk to a fitness professional &#8211; not to buy into the &#8220;hype&#8221; of infomercial&#8217;s, diet and fitness products that blatantly mislead.  8. Set exercise appointments with yourself.Use your day-timer to set appointments for exercise &#8211; and then stick to them. You wouldn&#8217;t miss a business meeting or client appointment, would you? So don&#8217;t miss your exercise appointment with yourself. Nothing is more important than your health. Nothing. Everything else will crumble around you if your health goes south. So make your exercise appointments a priority. If you find it difficult to keep these appointments, then consider hiring a personal trainer who will hold you to your commitment. When you have money invested, and someone waiting for you to show up &#8211; you are much more likely to actually show up!  9. Remember the benefits of exercise.Remember that feeling of euphoria you experienced after a particularly good work-out? You experienced that feeling because the most powerful &#8220;feel good&#8221; drug in the world &#8211; endorphins &#8211; were coursing through your veins. If there is a panacea, it&#8217;s exercise. Nothing feels better than the post-work-out high you experience after exercising. Revel in that feeling. Let it wash over you and truly experience it. Etch that feeling in your brain. It will fuel your motivation on those inevitable days when you just don&#8217;t feel like exercising. Being physically fit affects every single aspect of your life: you sleep better, eat better, love better, overcome stress better, work better, communicate better, and live better!  10. Exercise correctly.So much time is wasted doing, at best, unproductive exercise, or at worst, dangerous exercise. Get educated on how to exercise correctly. And the absolute best way to do that is to hire a personal trainer to develop a program for you and then teach you what to do and how to do it right. Personal training does not have to be an ongoing process. You can hire a personal trainer for whatever length of time you need to learn the ropes. It could be five sessions, or it could be fifteen sessions. It&#8217;s completely up to you. But statistics prove that those who understand how to exercise correctly, get better, faster results. And that&#8217;s what you want, right? Results!  11. Enjoy yourself.The most difficult thing is actually getting into your running shoes or going to the gym. But once you begin your work-out, relax and enjoy the process. Don&#8217;t fight it. Make exercise your personal time. When you are exercising you can focus completely on yourself. Yes, exercising can and should be somewhat rigorous (depending on your level of fitness), but it is just that investment which makes it supremely rewarding. As with anything, if you are in the moment, you can fully appreciate the experience and truly enjoy the process.  12. Americans eat too many carbohydrates for our lifestyles.I&#8217;m not advocating the high protein, high saturated fat diet that you hear so much about (frankly, its dangerous). But I am advocating minimizing your intake of bread, pasta, rice, potatoes and, of course, all sugary drinks. We are no longer an agrarian society participating in manual labor. Most of us are fairly sedentary throughout the day and therefore do not need the high levels of carbohydrates to sustain our energy. Additionally, carbohydrates are addictive. The more donuts you eat, the more you want. The bulk of your carbohydrates should come from vegetables and fruit. And those with high water content, such as cucumbers, grapefruit, tomatoes, cantaloupe, strawberries and even vegetable soups (watch out for high sodium), will fill you up nicely. By the way, numerous studies have conclusively proven that the quarter of the population eating the most vegetables get half the cancer of the quarter eating the least!  13. Deep-fried food has no nutritional value &#8211; none!Almost every food, whether it&#8217;s steak, chocolate or red wine, has some nutrients to contribute. But one thing is absolute: fried foods are garbage. Potato chips, French fries, onion rings, breaded chicken strips and all the rest of the deep-fried junk are pregnant with saturated fat and calories, and they contain almost zero nutritional value. If you&#8217;re trying to lose weight and/or reduce fat, simply eliminate fried foods completely from your diet. Yikes! That stuff is scary.  14. Never, ever skip breakfast.If you want to maximize your fitness results or fat-loss efforts, you&#8217;ve got to eat breakfast. Even if you don&#8217;t exercise at all &#8211; breakfast remains the most important meal of the day. Your breakfast should contain complete proteins and complex carbohydrates (if you&#8217;re trying to lose weight, you should eat the bulk of your complex carbohydrates at breakfast and lunch and only have vegetable carbohydrates at dinner). A great breakfast is oatmeal (not the pre-packaged, pre-sweetened kind) with a little honey and banana and a protein drink. Or try scrambled egg whites with Healthy Choice turkey sausage.  15. Drink plenty of fresh, clean water.Yes, I know that you&#8217;ve heard this over and over again. But there&#8217;s a reason for that &#8211; it&#8217;s the gospel truth! The recommended amount is approximately eight glasses, or 64 ounces, of water every day. When you are exercising, you need to drink even more. Over 75% of your body is water (even bone is more than 20% water). When you don&#8217;t drink enough water, and substitute diuretics like coffee, tea and caffeinated sodas, you dehydrate your body, your blood doesn&#8217;t flow properly, and your digestive system doesn&#8217;t operate smoothly (among other problems). Even a small deficit of water can radically affect how your body performs. Here&#8217;s a good rule of thumb: if you&#8217;re urine is a dark yellow and/or has a strong odor, you&#8217;re not drinking enough water. Drink up!  16. Eat regularly throughout the day.Fasting or overly restrictive diets will enable you to lose weight &#8211; in the short run, because the weight you lose is primarily water weight and lean muscle mass. In the long run, it has exactly the opposite effect you want. When you restrict your diet, your body instinctively thinks it&#8217;s being starved and shifts into a protective mode by storing fat. Energy expenditures are fueled by your lean muscles. Therefore your body fat remains essentially the same and you lose vital fluids and muscle instead. The less muscle you have, the slower your metabolism becomes, and the less fat you burn. Instead of eating three big meals (or worse yet, one HUGE meal) eat five or six nutritionally balanced &#8220;snack/meals&#8221; each day. This keeps your metabolic furnace stoked, so you burn more at a faster rate. I know, it&#8217;s counter-intuitive, but it&#8217;s true!There you have it. 16 essential strategies for an effective weight loss and fitness program that will have you looking and feeling better than you have in years &#8211; maybe ever! I realize that starting (or re-starting) a productive and effective health and fitness program is not easy. That&#8217;s why I encourage you to get help. If you&#8217;re sick, you go to the doctor. If you&#8217;ve got a tax problem, you see an accountant (or an attorney!). Have a toothache? You&#8217;re off to the dentist. So why is it that so many people attempt to solve their health and fitness problems without consulting an expert? I don&#8217;t know exactly, but I encourage you to make the investment in yourself &#8211; in your quality of life &#8211; by hiring a certified personal fitness trainer to educate you and help you get started (because the hardest part is just getting started and sustaining your motivation until fitness becomes habitual). <p>RGCT&#8217;s healthcare interventions include the Indira Gandhi Eye Hospital &amp; Research Centres, and the Rajiv Gandhi Arogya Yojna.</p>
<p>Indira Gandhi Eye Hospital &amp; Research Centres<br /> Inadequate development of human resources and infrastructure in UP has resulted in gross under delivery of quality eye care in the state, especially to the poor. To overcome this problem, RGCT joined hands with Aravind Eye Care System (AECS) to develop better eye care infrastructure and eliminate needless blindness in Northern India. Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai was started by Padmashri Dr G. Venkataswamy in 1976 with the mission &#8220;To eradicate needless blindness by providing appropriate, compassionate and high quality eye care for all&#8221;.  Aravind Eye Hospitals are charitable organisations run by the Govel Trust. AECS today serves 16,00,000 outpatients and performs 225,000 surgeries;  300 ophthalmologists and 600 paramedical workers are trained every year both in short- and long-term training in different sub specialties of ophthalmology.  This makes Aravind  the  largest provider  of  eye  care  in  the world  both  in  terms  of  service and training.</p>
<p><strong>Indira</strong><strong> Gandhi Eye Hospital</strong><strong> &amp; Research Centre (IGEH&amp;RC), Amethi: </strong>Located in Munshiganj, Amethi, was established by RGCT to serve the eye care needs of people residing in the nearby areas. IGEH&amp;RC was inaugurated on December 4, 2005 by Mrs Sonia Gandhi. The hospital is a 106-bedded facility covering approximately 20,000 square feet. The hospital serves a population of 23 million people from six districts. It has experienced rapid growth in all aspects in a very short span of time, and handled 1,87,460 outpatient visits and performed 32,682 surgeries from December 2005 to November 2008. Its specialty clinic include: Cataract/ General Ophthalmology; Glaucoma; and Medical Retina.</p>
<p><strong>IGEH&amp;RC, Lucknow: </strong>Having succeeded considerably in providing quality eye care services at Amethi, RGCT opened its tertiary eye hospital at Lucknow in May 2008. The Lucknow hospital is a 200-bedded facility covering approximately 50,000 square feet. The hospital serves a population of 20 million people from seven districts of UP. It is estimated that the hospital shall see 150,000 outpatients and 12,000 inpatients in the first year.  It also plans to target 100 eye screening camps per year in the future. Its specialty clinic include:Cataract/ General Ophthalmology; Glaucoma; Cornea<strong>; </strong>Pediatric Ophthalmology<strong>; </strong>Retina and Vitreous<strong>; </strong>andCornea.</p>
<p><strong>Community Outreach: </strong>An integral part of IGEHRC is its community outreach programmes such as screening eye camps, school eye health programme, village volunteer programme &#8212; all of which provide different strategies for taking eye care service to the doorstep of the community. They provide curative, preventive and rehabilitative care to the community along with information, education &amp; communication (IEC) programmes to improve service delivery to potential patients in the community. </p>
<p> Through free eye camps, medical teams from each hospital reach patients in rural areas. The teams work closely with local community leaders and service groups to organise the camps. Six camps a week are organised. Till November 2008, a total of 514 camps were conducted, at which 89,840 patients were examined and 26,840 site restoration surgeries performed. The medical team is also involved in educating the local community in the maintenance of proper eye care. Towards this end, the staff is currently implementing several comprehensive eye care projects. These projects include screening for diabetes-related eye disorders, eye screening at schools and treatment of children suffering from refractive errors, strabismus and Vitamin A deficiency. By bringing eye care services directly to the community, IGEHRC makes a significant contribution towards reducing needless blindness. </p>

<p>Rajiv Gandhi Arogya Yojna<br /> Rajiv Gandhi Arogya Yojna (RAY) came into existence in December 2005 to provide free medical aid to the poor people of Amethi district. It runs 16 clinics in the area in collaboration with Asia Heart Foundation which manages these clinics. They function as open patient departments (OPDs) which provide consultancy, treatment and free medicine for minor ailments, referring advanced and complicated cases to the Sanjay Gandhi Hospital in Munshiganj. Each clinic is manned by an MBBS doctor, and equipped with ECG facilities as well as capacity to administer the DOTS treatment for tuberculosis. Two clinics provide telemedicine facilities in association with Naraina Hrydalaya, Bangalore. An average of 30,000 to 40,000 patients per month avail of free healthcare at these clinic.</p>

<p>Hip replacement surgery, also called total hip arthroplasty, involves removing a diseased hip joint and replacing it with an artificial joint, called a prosthesis. Hip prostheses consist of a ball component, made of metal or ceramic, and a socket, which has an insert or liner made of plastic, ceramic or metal. The implants used in hip replacement are biocompatible — meaning they&#8217;re designed to be accepted by your body — and they&#8217;re made to resist corrosion, degradation and wear.</p>
<p>Hip replacement is typically used for people with hip joint damage from arthritis or an injury. Followed by rehabilitation, hip replacement can relieve pain and restore range of motion and function of your hip joint&#8230;</p>

<p><strong>Your Hip Surgery</strong></p>
<p>The hip is a ball and socket joint. The ball portion of the joint is called the femoral head, and is part of the upper leg bone (femur). The socket portion is called the acetabulum, and is part of the pelvic bone. The femoral head (ball) fits into the acetabulum (socket) and moves within its natural fluid, called synovial fluid, which helps to lubricate the joint during motion&#8230;</p>

<p><strong>Two Types of Hip Fixation</strong></p>
<p>There are two main types of fixation philosophies-cemented and porous. Both can be effective in the replacement of hip joints.` The physician (and the patient) will choose the best solution that is specific to the patient&#8217;s needs&#8230;.</p>

<p><strong> A  ]   Cemented Hip Implants</strong></p>
<p>The cemented hip implant is designed to be implanted using bone cement (a grout that helps position the implant within the bone). Bone cement is injected into the prepared femoral canal&#8230;.</p>

<p><strong>During Surgery</strong></p>
<p>The patient is first taken into the operating room and given anesthesia. After the anesthesia has taken effect, the skin around the upper thigh is thoroughly scrubbed with an antiseptic liquid. An incision of appropriate size is then made over the hip joint&#8230;.</p>

<p><strong>Replacing the Socket Portion of the Joint</strong></p>
<p>One type of implant that replaces the socket consists of a metal shell that is lined with a strong plastic liner&#8230;</p>

<p><strong>Removing the Surface of the Socket</strong></p>
<p>The leg is maneuvered until the femoral head is dislocated from the socket.</p>
<p>A special reamer is then used to remove the damaged cartilage and bone surface from the acetabulum, and to shape the socket so it will match the shape of the implant that will be inserted&#8230;.</p>

<p><strong>Inserting the Implant</strong></p>
<p>The shell portion of the socket implant may be attached either by using a special kind of epoxy cement for bones, or by pressing the implant into the socket so that it fits very tightly and is held in place by friction. Some implants may have special surfaces with pores that allow bone to grow into them to help hold the implant in place. Depending on the condition of the patient&#8217;s bone, the surgeon may also decide to use screws to help hold the implant in place&#8230;.</p>

<p><strong>Replacing the Ball Portion of the Joint</strong></p>
<p>The implant that replaces the ball consists of a long metal stem that fits down into the femur. The metal ball is mounted on top of this stem&#8230;.</p>

<p>A special power saw is used to remove the damaged femoral head&#8230;</p>

<p><strong>Clearing and Shaping the Canal</strong></p>
<p>The upper leg bone has relatively soft, porous bone tissue around the center. This part of the bone is called cancellous bone. It surrounds the canal, which mainly contains blood vessels and fatty tissue&#8230;</p>

<p><strong>Inserting the Implant</strong></p>
<p>The stem implant may be held in place by either using the special cement for bones, or by making it fit very tightly in the canal. If cement is used, it is injected into the canal first, and then the implant is inserted into the canal. If cement is not used, the implant is simply inserted into the canal. Like the socket implant, the stem implant may have a special surface with pores that allow bone to grow into them&#8230;.</p>

<p><strong>Closing the Wound</strong></p>
<p>When all the implants are in place, the surgeon places the new ball that is now part of the upper leg bone into the new socket that is secure within the pelvic bone. If necessary, the surgeon may adjust the ligaments that surround the hip to achieve the best possible hip function&#8230;..</p>

<p>Alcohol addiction, or alcoholism, wreaks havocs in an individual’s life as well as loved ones. Alcoholism can lead to relationship problems, health problems, school or work problems, money problems, and more. Those effects are all indirect results of alcoholism, and direct results of alcoholism can be just as destructive.</p>
<p>Emotional Effects of Alcoholism</p>
<p> A common contributing factor to alcohol addiction is depression. Unfortunately, alcoholism only worsens depression. Somebody who is addicted to alcohol will lose control of his or her emotions. An angry person will become angrier and more violent, for example. Also, alcohol abuse has a negative impact on motivation. An alcoholic will show low performance in school or at work, and will eventually stop participating in life altogether. Studies have also shown alcohol abuse to cause anxiety disorders, depression, and even hallucinations.
<p>Physical Effects of Alcoholism</p>
<p> Alcohol abuse may lead to gastrointestinal problems including: ulcers, pancreatic cancer, and gastritis. Alcohol addiction also causes cardio vascular complication such as cardiomyopathy and hypertension. Alcoholism severely weakens the immunity system. Those struggling with alcohol abuse may easily suffer serious infections, tuberculosis, pneumonia, and different type of cancers. Alcohol abuse may also damage the peripheral and central nervous system, resulting in serious cognitive impairment. Alcoholic males have reported impotency, testicular atrophy and gynecomastia. Consuming alcohol during pregnancy can cause mental retardation, facial deformity and/or other neurological problems (fetal alcohol syndrome).

<p>Drug and alcohol rehabilitation are offered by multiple treatment centers. The person can choose private inpatient care and outpatient treatment care. It is up to the individual to do what is best for them. There are some individuals who would rather take the inpatient treatment because it gives them privacy in one of the many <a rel="nofollow" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/article_exit_link');" href="http://www.privatedrugtreatmentcenters.com/" title="Christian Treatment Facilities">Christian treatment facilities</a>. They don&#8217;t want to share living space with anyone. It also provides them with a place where they can stay while they are going through treatment and they don&#8217;t have to see the same influencing people that got them into this addiction in the first place. However, inpatient treatment in a traditional rehab program can be quite expensive.</p>
<p>Most rehab centers charge a whopping monthly fee of ,000. Not everyone can afford this amount of money. There are some people who don&#8217;t have the money. However, there are people who don&#8217;t have the medical insurance that is necessary to cover the cost. There are government subsidized grants that are available if the individual is eligible. Most Christian treatment centers received donations from charity and also volunteer services from people in the community. This helps a lot because they are able to better finance the treatment program.</p>

<p>The addict does not have the strength to fight against the enemy so God&#8217;s word has to be imparted to them in order for them to be strengthened. God is the one who has the power to change an individual. With this change, the person will be transformed and able to move forward to implement the change that will not only impact them, but also the people around them.</p>
<p>Maggie had to go through so much in the early years of her life. She fought against the addiction of alcohol and sometimes, it seemed as if she had won; only to be let down by her constant relapse. Maggie did not know what else to do. She sought the help of a friend that she had neglected for so many years. Her friend, Gayle, did not hesitate when Maggie called on her. Gayle also had experience with alcoholism because her husband drank himself to death so she knew that Maggie was fighting a losing battle without God. Gayle told Maggie about the <a rel="nofollow" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/article_exit_link');" href="http://www.privatedrugtreatmentcenters.com/" title="Christian Recovery Programs">Christian recovery programs</a> in their city and how it had helped someone on her job. She was sorry that her father did not live to get that kind of treatment.</p>
<p>She was not able to provide assistance to her father, but she was certain that she would help Maggie in the process by giving her the support that she needed.</p>
